Ruth Owen is the editor of NES. Her life has revolved around horses since day one with her parents owning a small Welsh Cob Stud called Deicin for many years. The stud is still going today and Ruth is very much involved with its management and day-to-day business, breaking horses to sell and helping with stud duties such as covering the mares, foaling, weaning and so forth.

Ruth studied a degree in Equine Studies and Business Management in Warwickshire College from 1997-2001. The degree was a sandwich course and included a year in industry. With a real passion for writing, she decided to combine her two interests and use the year to venture into the world of equine publishing. She spent six months working for Market Link Publishing in Essex as an Assistant Editor to two small titles, namely Dressage and Show Jumping. The following six months were spent working as a Marketing Assistant for Horse and Hound in London, where she met Sam. During her final year in university she wrote extensively for a number of equine publications and continued to work for Horse and Hound, marketing the portfolio at large events across the UK.

On completing her degree, Ruth returned to her home town of Aberystwyth in West Wales where she currently works as a Project Manager for Aberystwyth University. By sheer coincidence, Sam also moved to the area - they put their heads together and came up with National Equine Student. The first issue was launched in April 2003 under the banner of Owen-Hurn Media Ltd, before joining forces with Greenshires in September 2006.
