The classes for trainees and apprentices are very important at the SMS’s ‘nationals’ because they will always be a preview of some of the big stars of the future.

On that basis, watch out for Elena Duggan (Gerry Reynolds Saddlery), Alison Kinge (Pointings Saddlery)  and Martin Andrew (Horse-e-things) who respectively occupied the first three places in a class for a trainee saddle.  The first three places in the class for trainee bridlework were occupied by Donna Kirby (Cordwainers), Mark Hargreaves (Saddlery Training Centre) and Jocelyn Gilbert (Cordwainers).

Three young entrants, all ex-Cordwainers, carried off all the prizes in the trainee class for an Atherstone girth - namely Myra Bee (1st), Joanne Breese (2nd) and Mary Wing To (3rd).  The class for a trade trainee saddle was won by Chris Flintoff who is with Walsall-based Ideal Saddle Company.

The Master and Apprentice class – this year for a breastplate with attachment - was won by Mark Fisher and his apprentice Elinor Harris who are based in Cambridgeshire.
