College/Training Establishment Attended: Abingdon and Witney College, Oxford Brookes University

Course Studied: BSc (Hons) Equine Science

Year of Graduation/Completion: 2006

Current job title including company: Veterinary Groom, Scott Dunn’s Equine Clinic, Berkshire

Description of job: To provide 24-hour care to the in-patients, which includes their individual care plans. Helping vets with x-rays, routine operations, bone scintigraphy, lameness work-ups (and anything else they ask me to do!).

Good elements of job: If the yard isn’t busy there is the opportunity to go out on call with the vets, which is fun as you meet the clients. I also find this useful because as a physiotherapist a major part of the job will be to build a good relationship with clients. Another aspect I enjoy, which I didn’t think I would at the start, is the surgery. The first time I went into theatre I was very scared of embarrassing myself by fainting, as I couldn’t stand the sight of blood! This job certainly helped me overcome that fear!

Bad elements of job: The hours!

Future Plans: As well as working at the vets, I am currently studying with the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists’ (NAVP), following their part-time training course to become a qualified veterinary physio. I hope to qualify at the end of the year and become self employed.
