Warwickshire College’s Moreton Morrell Centre once again hosted its annual Equine Inter-College competition.

A total of 11 teams took part, including Warwickshire. The day was organised by the BTEC National Diploma Year 2 students who have taken the Event Management module. The other teams that participated were:

Moulton (last year’s winners), Askham Bryan, Merrist Wood, Rodbaston, Abingdon & Witney, Sparsholt, Bicton, Duchy, Hadlow and Easton.

Each team consisted of four members. Two of them rode a Preliminary Dressage test and the other two rode a 2’ 9” show jumping course. On completion of both phases the top six teams with the highest marks went through to the quiz, which was to be the conclusion of the day. The prize giving at this point was made to the 7th – 11th placing teams, who were:

7th         -           Hadlow

8th         -           Bicton

9th         -           Abingdon & Witney

10th       -           Easton

11th       -           Sparsholt

Rodbaston went into the quiz two points ahead of Warwickshire. At the end of the quiz both colleges were joint first so they went through to a tiebreaker of the quickest team putting together a double bridle correctly. Warwickshire put their bridle in for checking first but it was not quite right. Rodbaston managed to complete theirs while the Warwickshire students were trying to work out the error. Rodbaston put their bridle through for checking which was correct, so they took the 2009 title.

The final six placings worked out as:

1st         -           Rodbaston

2nd        -           Warwickshire

3rd         -           Duchy

4th         -           Merrist Wood

5th         -           Askham Bryan

6th         -           Moulton

Equine Show and Events Organiser Sue Farmer, who is also the National Diploma Level 2 Event Management module leader, said: “A huge thank you must be paid to everyone from staff and students who helped with the day in one form or another. A lot of great comments were made about the horses, organisation and the day in general. Thank you and well done too to the Event Management students who put the day on and spent their time in the weeks before preparing for it.”
