The Saddle Research Group - Public Survey LaunchedCurrently, the multidisciplinary team of scientists and equine industry professionals is carrying out scientific research, using state of the art technology, to assess the influence of saddles on equine backs. The study aims to provide preliminary evidence that new and innovative back assessment methods must be developed, indicating which parameters are most appropriate for this purpose and ultimately inform saddle design. Dr Debbie Nash, Lecturer in Animal and Equine Science, Aberystwyth University says: “Scientific data to demonstrate the role of the saddle in changing normal back functioning is deficient. Before steps can be taken to determine the best methods for assessing and fitting saddlery, it is vital to provide evidence that saddles do indeed have an effect upon physical, behavioural and performance parameters.” Anne Bondi BHSI, international rider and trainer says: “The influence of saddles on welfare, performance and safety is one of the most underestimated issues affecting all levels of the equestrian population - from recreational cob to Olympic athlete. By taking part in this survey horse owners and riders have a unique opportunity to get involved in this project.” The survey can be found at www.saddleresearchgroup.co.uk and all equestrian enthusiasts are encouraged to take part. The results of the pilot study will be published in the autumn. For further details email research@saddleresearchgroup.co.uk |
