At the shake up, riders from eleven universities were to be represented in the second round with only six of them due to progress to the semi-final the following day. The afternoon saw the trophy teams launch their campaign, riding team and individual tests to finish off the competition for the day.
The following morning the riders prepared to tackle the intricate medium level test after seven minutes warm up on their horses. When results were announced Rebecca Stephen (Robert Gordon) and Jo Davies (Birmingham) had made it to the final to ride the Advanced Medium test and compose the freestyle, leaving Guy Herbert (Royal Agricultural College) in 3rd, Charlotte Pearson-Wood (Brighton) 4th, Danielle Jackson (Westminster) 5th and Phillipa Castro (Leeds) 6th.
After the closest final, with only 10 marks splitting the riders over the twelve tests sheets, Rebecca Stephen walked away as dressage champion leaving Jo Davies in second place. Show jumping followed for the trophy competitors in the afternoon before the final results could be announced. After all riders had competed, Birmingham ended up in the winning spot, trailed by Leeds (2nd), Aberystwyth (3rd), RoyalVeterinaryCollege (4th), Southampton (5th) and York (6th).
Horses Inside Out with Gillian Higgins visited Arena UK in the evening with the audience finding the demonstration fascinating. The final day was prepared and the Championship teams were ready to start the jumping phase. Judged on style, the best rider on each horse moved on to the second round at about 1.05m, with the same being true of those that moved on to the third round at 1.15m.
Six riders prepared to try to have the least faults on their horse in the third round and if they were equal with others they also had the clock to consider. Ultimately this turned into a speed class as all thoughts of going clear headed out of the window, with the exception of Emily Llewelyn (Sussex) who jumped her third clear of the day.
This guaranteed her place in the final alongside Danielle Jackson, jumping a track around 1.25m. Charlotte Bullick (Leeds) finished 3rd with Sarah Vermont (Liverpool) 4th, Claire Dowden (UCL) 5th and Rebecca Stephen 6th. The final saw several poles fall but Emily finished on the least faults as the winner with Danielle finishing a successful few days in 2nd.
On calculation of final results Leeds had taken the team dressage title with UCL winning the show jumping. Overall Leeds took the Championship with UCL (2nd) and RoyalAgriculturalCollege hot on their heels in third place. Birmingham (4th) could not replicate the success of their winning trophy team, while Newcastle came fifth and Liverpool sixth.
Individually, the winner Rebecca Stephen and runner up Danielle Jackson finished on the same score but were subsequently split by the higher placed dressage rider taking the title. The runner up, Danielle, had only gained her place one week before the Championships and her joy with second was clear to see. Phillipa Castro, a current British University Equestrian team member on Nations Cup teams, took 3rd fast followed by Charlotte Bullick in 4th. Two Royal Agricultural team members, Guy Herbert and Becky Woolven, took 5th and 6th respectively.
Sixty-nine competitors arrived for registration at Arena UK on Monday 31st March anticipating three great days of competition, enjoyment and entertainment. Day one started bright and early with the team dressage tests where three members of each team enter the arena together to perform the team test. With the winning rider on each borrowed horse progressing to the second round, rivalry was at its height and 21 tests were performed on tenterhooks.
