Emma Harford, BHSIT
College/Training Establishment Attended: The Talland School of Equitation
Course Studied: BHSINT SM and NVQ II, III & Assessor also SSA (Side Saddle Association) B instructor
Year of Graduation/Completion: Still studying! Attained BHSAI in 2000 and IT (Intermediate Teaching) in 2003
Current job title including company: Yard Manager at The Talland School of Equitation Description of job: I am responsible for the day to day running of Talland's large yard, which means I look after the overall welfare of approximately 80 horses and ensure that the equestrian centre runs smoothly. I oversee our working students as well as teaching both astride and side saddle, lecturing for BHS exams and assessing for NVQs
Good elements of job: My job is challenging and very rewarding when students leave with what they came to
achieve. Talland has a lovely family atmosphere and there are few places in the country where you get to see such a variety of different horses and riders; from nervous beginners to Paralympians and top level eventers. Also because of Talland's reputation the standard of horses we have for the school is amazing.
Bad elements of job: The long hours that go with all horsey jobs is the main downside and it can be disheartening when we occasionally get a student that lacks motivation. You've really got to want to do your job and love horses to get on in this profession.
Future Plans: I want to take my Stage IV Riding and my BHSI Stable Managers (SM) this year as well become a SSA A instructor. I've also just bought a new youngster so hope to compete him towards the end of the year.
