The Smart Tails tool was tested on a variety of horses and ponies at Abbotsholme School Equestrian Centre with coarse and fine manes and tails.

The first test was on a very thick, coarse un-pulled tail using the coarse comb. Using the coarse blades which are spaced further apart to allow for more hair to be trimmed, the tail was tidied in a short time leaving a natural look. Pupils agreed that the main advantage was a more humane way of tidying tails particularly for sensitive horses therefore making it safer. They also appreciated the time savings. The finish was tidy and the tool was used by BHS Stage 2 students. The tool had a plastic moulded handle which was comfortable and easy to use.

The fine comb in the Professional range was also tested and pupils were impressed that in that range, blades were replaceable and/or interchangeable.

Another practical use for the coarse bladed tool was thinning of feathers and ponies with hairy backs of legs. A very pleasing finish was achieved in a short space of time, and compared to trimming methods with scissors or razors, a more natural look was achieved. Other applications for this tool could be for thinning forelocks and for use on Mountain and Moorland or native breeds.

The tool was also used on coarse and fine manes to cut and thin. For a thick mane the coarse blade was used
because it has more space in between the blades and can process more hair. In order to thin and tidy the mane, it has to be brushed over onto the wrong side, which leave the top hairs untouched. When the mane has been thinned it looks natural and lies down and can be given a straight level finish if required. For horses with fine manes, it was suggested that after thinning it may be necessary to pull it afterwards to achieve an even line.

In summary, pupils thought that the time savings and humane considerations made this product a must have in the grooming kit and were pleased with the quality finishes achieved.

The costs of Smart Tails is reasonable with the price of the Standard coarse tool £12.50. The professional range starts from £20 and is excellent value because of the option of replacement and interchangeable blades.
